Why, Teacher?
One day, while teaching a class of 5 year old Korean kids, I watched one of my students have a zen-like moment as she realized that the world was bigger & more mysterious than she had imagined. The situation went as follows:
Student: “John Teacher, why?”
(she points at my eyes)
AJ (realising she wanted to know why my eyes were a different shape than hers): “Why?”
(I point at her eyes)
Student: “Because I am Korean.”
(she points at her eyes)
AJ: “Ah, because I am not Korean.”
(I point at my eyes)
Her face tenses in thought. After a moment, her head tilts to one side and her eyebrows raise. Then she nods her head. The tale-tell signs of a child getting her mind blown.
